Punjab Government Plans High-Speed Rail Between Rawalpindi and Lahore: The Punjab government is moving forward with a groundbreaking high-speed rail project connecting Rawalpindi and Lahore. The $1.6 billion proposal, submitted for approval to the Chief Minister, aims to cut travel time between the two cities to under two hours by enabling trains to reach speeds of up to 250 km/h.
Developed by the transport and mass transit departments, the project emphasizes the need for an action plan based on a pre-feasibility study. While funding remains a key challenge, the initiative marks a significant step towards modernizing Pakistan’s infrastructure.
In addition to the high-speed rail, the Punjab government recently approved a tram service for Lahore, inspired by systems in Finland and China. This 11-kilometer tram route will serve key areas like Kalma Chowk, Liberty, and Main Market, at an estimated cost of Rs. 27 billion, further enhancing the province’s transport network.
